THE ADVANCED ROLE OF A MUSICIAN IN THE SOCIETY

Music is not a game of ‘bite & blow’.

It is pure & genuine & being a deep expression of the feelings that arise from within, music has always had an intimate relationship with the society.

This has been witnessed from the beginning of human civilization, where music being an integral part of the society has not only influenced quality lives but determined the course of things and effected change. As a result, musicians have become public figures.

A musician like MIRIAM MAKEBA became an activist, sang and spoke out against South Africa’s dark days of apartheid. BOB MARLEY & 2PAC sang & spoke against bad governance and corrupt leaders.

They all made you understand that music is good and stands for the ultimate good of the society. The society is the people, meaning music is for the people, hence, should stand with the people. The role of the musician then is to be the voice of the society (the people) for the society is good, except for corrupt political authorities and bad governments.

In Cameroon, LAPIRO stood with the people, RICHARD BONA has been speaking against Cameroon’s bad governance.

So if by now and as a musician, you are yet to understand the force you have to rebel against corrupt governments & help move a society forward, then now is the time to know.

At least, if you’ve forgotten about Lapiro so soon, Charlotte Dipanda just reminded you recently that the role of a Musician is for the greater good of the society and not to take sides with corrupt governments as some have been doing in the face of the Anglophone crisis.

And taking from Miriam Makeba historic speech before the United Nations General Assembly in 1963, “I ask you and all the leaders of the world, would you act differently, would you keep silent and do nothing if you were in our place?” – any musician who keeps quiet in the face of injustice, corruption and bad governance has failed himself and failed the law of music which is for the greater good of the society.

We will end this article with this quote from the Greek Philosopher; PLATO, “When modes of music change, the fundamental laws of the state always change with them.”

That is the power music has got and of which as a musician/public figure, you must utilize to ensure that the society is upright.
