International Day of The Girl Child 2019 . Theme : “GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable”
The International Day of the Girl Child is being Celebrated every year on October 11th. This day was initiated in 2013 in order to celebrate the girl child, and create awareness of gender inequality faced by the girl child.
This day which is celebrated worldwide was declared by the United Nations, and was first celebrated on October 11th 2012. The main aim of this observation is to create awareness on the unfair treatment the Girl child faces in areas such as Education, Nutrition, Medical Care, Domestic violence and Early Marriages.
According to Wikipedia, the International Day of Girls initiative began as a project of Plan International, a non-governmental organization that operates worldwide. The idea for an international day of observance and celebration grew out of Plan International’s “Because I Am a Girl” campaign, which raises awareness of the importance of nurturing girls globally and in developing countries in particular.
Each year is commemorated unfer a different theme. These themes speak greatly on how the day/year is observed and celebrated. the first in 2012 was “ending child marriage”, in 2013, was “innovating for girls’ education”, in 2014, was “Empowering Adolescent Girls: Ending the Cycle of Violence”. In 2015, it was “The Power of Adolescent Girl: Vision for 2030.” The 2016 theme was “Girls’ Progress = Goals’ Progress: What Counts for Girls,” the 2017 theme was “EmPOWER Girls: Before, during and after crises,” and the theme for 2018 was “With Her: A Skilled Girl Force.”
Women have evolved greatly over the years, from being ministers and great entrepreneurs, to mothers who can teach their children the right norms and values of the society.
They now take part and have a big role to play in issues that concerns the society they live in. The rate of child marriage has reduced, rape and domestic violence, and also the girl child is now able to express herself in public without the fear of being bashed by the opposite gender. She is now able to go to places freely and also make choices that will affect her life. In this effect, the girl child can be said to be unscripted and unstoppable.
Several movements have been created that preach to adolescents on the disadvantages of child marriage and inequality in the society. These societies also empower the girl child on the things they can do to help their community in particular and the society in general.
Basically, this year’s theme celebrates the achievements of the girl child since the adoption of Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which was aimed at recognizing the rights of women and girls.
